I often notice that people are confused about what is what. Some tell me it is all the same, others know there is a difference between them but do not exactly know what. Then there are the judges saying these works and that doesn’t work, I believe in this but not in that.

Here are my thoughts. I have received and delivered all four and there are clear differences between them. The clue can be found in WHEN to use which approach to ensure the client, colleague, or team will reach their goal and succeed in their development.

CONSULTING:
refers to providing expert advice, guidance, or services in a specific field to help solve problems, improve performance, or achieve their goals. My company provides executive search consultancy by searching and selecting the right managers my clients need. Consultancy is useful when data availability and rational thinking lead to better decision-making.

TRAINING:
the process of developing and improving knowledge, skills, and abilities through instruction, practice, and experience. Training helps employees develop skills for their job roles through repeated practice. We provide mostly training in our outplacement program by supporting employees leaving their organization, due to layoffs, downsizing, or restructuring. It helps affected employees transition to new opportunities. Training works best when teams or individuals need to acquire know-how and capabilities to become more successful.

MENTORING:
is a development relationship in which an experienced person (the mentor) provides guidance, support, and advice to a less experienced person (the mentee). Most of the mentoring I received and did during my corporate career and many years later I am still grateful for all the knowledge I received through my epic mentors.

COACHING:
is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. Coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity and leadership. It works often well when clients have the necessary skills, creativity and experience but something is holding them back from succeeding and reaching their full potential. As an accredited, educated and experienced business and executive coach I love to support managers by coaching them online, in person and outdoors in nature.

In conclusion, all four methods proved that they can be successful for the development of employees and teams, reaching goals and improving competencies. In the role of individual or team member, each of us can figure out the most effective method of reaching your short or mid-term goal. You might also check in with your human resources department and ask their advice on which support would suit you best. Sretno!
